Simple and rugged
The Il-28’s wing was straight, but its tail was swept to keep control at high speed. Its engines came from the same family as the MiG-15’s, derived from the copied Nene. Its crew of three, a pilot, a navigator-bombardier in the glazed nose and a gunner in the tail, could operate it easily in harsh conditions. Its NATO code name was “Beagle”.
A long service
The Il-28 went to the Warsaw Pact countries, China, the Middle East and elsewhere. In 1962 the Il-28s that the Soviet Union had sent to Cuba were among the weapons whose withdrawal was demanded along with the missiles. Copies built in China as the H-5 stayed in service for decades.
In WarSimBox
In the game it is a jet bomber: fast, carrying up to 3 tonnes of bombs, it defends its tail with the two 23 mm cannon of the powered tail turret. It also has two fixed 23 mm cannon in the nose.
