Gloster Meteor F.3

The Gloster Meteor was Britain’s first jet fighter and the only Allied jet to see combat in the Second World War. The straight-winged, twin-engined Meteor was used against V-1 flying bombs in the summer of 1944. After the war it set speed records and flew with dozens of air forces.

V-1 hunter

The Meteor’s first squadron was sent against the V-1 flying bombs launched at London in July 1944. In August 1944 a Meteor pilot whose guns had jammed brought down a V-1 by sliding his wingtip under its wing and tipping it over. In the last months of the war Meteors were sent to Europe too, but they never met an Me 262.

After the war

In November 1945 a specially prepared Meteor set a world speed record. Over the next decade the Meteor was the main jet fighter of the RAF and many other air forces; it fought in Korea with Australian squadrons, but was outclassed by the swept-wing MiG-15 and moved to ground attack.

In WarSimBox

In the game it is the first British jet: much faster than the piston aircraft, with four 20 mm cannon in the nose. Its early jet engines respond slowly to the throttle; it is sluggish when slow, so it must keep its speed up.

Unlocked in the aircraft tree after researching Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX and Centrifugal-flow turbojet. Leads on to: North American F-86F Sabre.
