Douglas A-26B Invader

The Douglas A-26 Invader was a fast twin-engined attack bomber. The B version had eight .50 in guns in its nose and was defended by remotely controlled turrets. It entered the war in 1944, and afterwards, as the B-26, fought in Korea and Vietnam too.

Fast and heavily armed

The A-26 was designed by the team of Ed Heinemann, who also designed the SBD at Douglas, as an attack bomber to replace aircraft such as the A-20 Havoc and the B-25. With a laminar-flow wing and powerful engines it was nearly as fast as many fighters of its day. Its dorsal and ventral turrets were remotely controlled, aimed through a periscope by a gunner in the fuselage.

Three wars

The A-26 went into combat in the Pacific in the summer of 1944 and in Europe that autumn. In 1948 the US Air Force redesignated it the B-26. It was used heavily for night attacks in the Korean War and flew as a night attack aircraft in the Vietnam War. It served with many air forces into the 1970s.

In WarSimBox

In the game it sits in the attack line, in the second stage of the research tree. The eight .50 in guns in its nose pour very heavy fire on ground targets and aircraft; it carries bombs internally and rockets under the wings. Remotely controlled dorsal and ventral turrets defend it. It is fast but a large target.

Unlocked in the aircraft tree after researching Ilyushin Il-10 and North American B-25J Mitchell.
